- Aktör Celil Mahir, rakip tiyatro topluluğunun oyuncularını ayartarak turneye çıkmalarına mâni olmaya çalışırken, jönprömiye Özdemir’in sahnede aniden öldüğünü öğrenir. Buna rağmen topluluk turneye çıkmaya kararlıdır. Kaderine razı gelen Celil Mahir de fırsattan istifade İstanbul’da oyunlar sahnelemek ister, ancak maddi sıkıntılar yakasını bırakmaz. Derken tiyatroya âşık, sahneye çıkmaya da hevesli, siyah saçlı, ateş dudaklı, genç ve zengin İclal’le tanışır; talih, Celil Mahir’in yüzüne gülmüştür. İclal’in koyduğu sermayeyle işe girişirler. Oyun hazırlıkları devam ederken, sahnenin dışındaki hayat da tam gaz devam eder. Kalabalık sofralarda sabahlara kadar süren eğlenceler, flörtöz buluşmalar, çapkınlıklar, dalavereler, ayak oyunları ve kulislerdeki dedikodular başını alıp gider. Türk tiyatrosuna önemli katkıları olan Mahmut Yesari’nin 1936’da Tan gazetesinde yayımlandıktan sonra ilk kez kitaplaştırılan Gece Yarısı romanında tiyatro, yalnızca estetik bir ifade alanı değil, aynı zamanda maddi ilişkiler ağı içinde işleyen bir üretim sahası olarak da ele alınır. Erken Cumhuriyet yıllarının tiyatro hayatı; rekabet ortamı, kumpanya idaresi ve turne pratikleri, oyuncuların yaşam tarzları ve sahne gösterişinin arkasındaki sefalet çarpıcı bir biçimde anlatılır. Romandaki Celil Mahir (Celal Sahir), Kuvart (Nuvart Suat), Fofo (Toto Karaca), Sadrettin Rahmeti (Nurettin Şefkati), Sunullah (Lütfullah Sururi) ve Amca Safder (Baba Saffet) gibi karakterlerin çoğu ise dönemin ünlü oyuncularını anıştırmaktadır.
