- Çehov 1891 yılında Novoye Vremya gazetesinde tefrika edilen Düello'da, insan doğasının karmaşıklığını çarpıcı bir üslupla ortaya koyar. Tanıdığı bir zoologla dönemin popüler meselelerinden biri olan en güçlünün ayakta kalması üzerine tartışmaları epistemolojik ve etik çatışmalar ekseninde yapıtın temelini oluşturmuştur. Yazar insanın zaaflarına, başkalarını bağışlama ve kendini değiştirip geliştirme yetisine işaret ettiği bu öyküsüne mekan olarak Kafkasya'yı, Karadeniz kıyısındaki küçük bir kenti seçmiştir. Eğitimli Rus aristokrat Layevski, evli bir kadınla yaşamaktadır ve birlikte kaçıp geldikleri bu kentte devlet memuru olmuştur. Ancak zamanla kadından soğumuş, ilişkiyi sonlandırmanın yollarını aramaktadır. Layevski'nin sorumsuzluğu, fazla içki içmesi, hesabını bilmeden para harcaması ve kendisine bağımlı olan bir kadından kurtulmaya çalışması, sosyal Darwinci zoolog Von Koren'de tiksinti uyandırmaktadır. Olaylara sadece bilimin çerçevesinden bakabilen Von Koren'in gözünde Layevski gibiler insanlığa ve uygarlığa yönelik bir tehdittir ve dünya böyle insanlardan arındırılırsa çok daha yaşanılası bir yer haline gelecektir.
