- When Jean Baudrillard published The Art Conspiracy in 1996, he declared that contemporary art no longer had a raison d'être, causing a huge scandal in art circles. Art appropriates vulgarity, waste, mediocrity, value and ideology, he wrote, stating that contemporary art is null and void. In the face of this attack, some critics and curators erased the name Baudrillard from their notebooks; Those who knew the job only felt the sensual chill of this bright scandal that caused repercussions. It didn't matter what was said about art - as long as art was mentioned. The worldwide New Art Order was so powerful and dazzling that it was capable of provoking all kinds of threats against itself and of intimidating and perpetuating these threats. In The Art Conspiracy, Baudrillard claimed exactly this: Criticism had turned into an illusion of criticism, a counter-discourse inherent in the consumption order. Today, art, like any business business, offers career opportunities, profitable investments and sublimated consumption objects. Everything that has nothing to do with art turns into art. You can encounter sexuality anywhere in America except sexual intercourse, Roland Barthes would say. Now there is art everywhere, even in art. -Sylvere Lotringer- Jean Baudrillard is the avant-garde of the Paris-based radical transformation in the world of thought after the 1968 revolution. Concepts such as simulation and hyperreality developed by him constitute the keys to cultural criticism today. Baudrillard's studies on contemporary art and aesthetics, which we will continue to publish from his art life series, are considered the main references of those who think about contemporary art.
