- Jack London'ın 1907'de yayımlanan Demir Ökçe adlı eseri, modern distopik romanların ilki sayılır. Totaliter ve baskıcı sistemdeki toplumu tanımlamak için kullanılan distopya kavramı, bu kitapta, ABD'de oligarşik bir tiranlığın yükselişinde yansır. George Orwell'in Bin Dokuz Yüz Seksen Dört adlı romanına da esin kaynağı olan Demir Ökçe, toplumda ve siyasette gelecekte yer alacak değişiklikleri irdeler. Jack London'ın ileride ABD'de bir çöküş yaşanacağı yolundaki öngörüsü tam anlamıyla gerçekleşmemişse de, yazarın uluslararası gerginliklerle ilgili görüşleri birkaç yıl farkla da olsa gerçek tarihle örtüşür. Demir Ökçe'de 1913'te başlayan bu çatışma, gerçekte 1914'te patlak vermiştir. Dahası, London sadece 1914'te olanları değil, İkinci Dünya Sa-vaşı'na giden olayları da kehanette bulunurcasına öngörmüş; faşist yapılanmanın dünyayı nasıl dehşete sürükleyeceğini ve bunun karşısındaki devrimci duruşun nasıl olması gerektiğini dile getirmiştir.
