Leigh Bardugo General Fantasy Teen & Young Adult Books Editorial Review
Six of Crows is a YA fantasy heist story set in the Grishaverse. The six young and vulnerable characters are distinct and memorable, with a wealth of character development and motives. Bardugo's worldbuilding is immersive and believable, with a good sense of place. The magic system is well thought out and the plot is extremely detailed and unpredictable. However, the book starts slowly and could be difficult to get into for some readers. The romance is secondary to the main plot and mostly avoids typical YA tropes, but there are three obvious couples. There are very dark elements such as a torture scene and a backstory of sex slavery. The book is not a standalone but is the first in a duology. Physical copies are recommended for the gorgeous design, including maps by Keith Thompson and red end pages. Overall, Six of Crows is a page-turner with great characters and intricate plotting in an adventure with serious and long-term Consequences, both personal and political.
