"Scythe" is a captivating dystopian novel by Neal Shusterman. The story is set in a world where death is non-existent but population control is needed and is carried out by Scythes, who glean people at random. Protagonists Citra and Rowen are reluctantly chosen as apprentices, which makes them perfect for the job. The book had a tendency towards exposition, but the world-building was fresh and original, and the characters were well-written and likable. The love story and mystery intertwined with the plot added to the overall enjoyment of the book. Although the story wrapped up the main plotline, it leaves things open for more in the larger world, thus prompting a sequel. The book's concept was great and kept readers interested from beginning to end.
