Horror Editorial Review
**** Kwaidan [Blu-ray] has received widespread acclaim for its breathtaking visual artistry and unique storytelling approach. This 1965 classic film, reissued by Criterion in 2015, presents four ghost stories drawn from traditional Japanese folklore, artfully molded into a cinematic experience reminiscent of Japanese theater. Viewers are treated to a meditative journey rather than a typical horror movie, with ghostly narratives that are both unsettling and artistically enchanting. Each story in Kwaidan explores themes of broken promises and the complex interplay between the natural and supernatural realms. The film features a combination of live action with vividly painted sets, inviting comparisons to elaborate stage performances. Its appeal lies in the meticulous composition of each frame, akin to a moving painting, enhanced by a haunting score that adds to the ethereal atmosphere. Critics and audiences alike have noted the film’s divergence from conventional horror tropes. Instead of relying on jump scares or gory visuals, Kwaidan immerses viewers in a dreamlike narrative where horror is ingrained in the atmosphere and underlying emotions. The acting is Consistently praised for its depth and expressiveness, further enriching the viewing experience. The tales of “Black Hair,” “The Woman of the Snow,” “Hoichi the Earless,” and “In a Cup of Tea” each feature intricate storytelling and profound moral lessons, making the film resonate on both an intellectual and emotional level. Overall, Kwaidan stands as a testament to the power of cinema as a blend of art, music, and narrative. It’s a perfect recommendation for those who appreciate classic ghost stories told with elegance and a strong visual flair. **
