It has internal tank clearance of 1 3/4" and the tank trim clearance is 1 5/16" which is perfect for 22 gallons or an even larger tank. The surface skimmer must be immersed in water to work, but it doesn't suck in that strong so there is no need to worry about food getting pulled in.
