Mare Nostrum is a well-designed, relatively short civilization-building and trading game set in the Mediterranean Sea. It has simple and efficient mechanics, a lot of player interaction, four possible victory conditions, and a mythological twist by adding heroes and monsters from Greek, Roman, and Near Eastern mythology. However, the map is felt to be too small, and the lack of "world events" is a missed opportunity. The MYTHIC BEAST PROMO pack is highly recommended as it adds even more cool monsters to the game. Downsides include the game being very mean and new players can/will get crushed unless they fully understand the trade rules.
