The Chiltern Classic edition of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey in hardcover is receiving positive reviews from customers. The novel is a satirical commentary on literature, education and the nature of women of its time and is specifically targeted at Gothic horror/romances of the era. The book is hilarious, witty and ironic, and characterisations still feel real and are often funny. The main character, Catherine Morland, is unsophisticated and naive with a head full of lurid novels, but she is a lovable combination of tomboy and bookworm. The humorous and light-hearted characters add to the overall mood of the book, and the story is enormous fun. However, this edition is not recommended as an introduction to Austen as it is not in the same league as Austen’s mature masterpieces such as Pride and Prejudice, Emma or Persuasion.
