Answer: I have used this case constantly for almost 10 months and can see no wear on the spine. The whole case looks almost brand new. -

Answer: The inner shell that holds the iPad is made of a flexible plastic material. It is unlikely to cause any scratches. Once the iPad is in the case, it provides a good level of protection and does not need to be frequently removed.
