Comedy Editorial Review

**** "Polyester," part of the Criterion Collection, presents a renewed exploration of John Waters' idiosyncratic satire, showcasing his unique flair for combining tasteless humor with profound social commentary. Initially dismissed by one viewer as a product of "Ed Wood wannabes," the film quickly transformed skepticism into admiration, earning a place in their top ten all-time favorites due to its unexpected depth and comedic brilliance. The film follows the life of Francine Fishpaw, portrayed expressively by Divine, as she navigates the chaos of a life unraveling. As the story unfolds, viewers are drawn into a whirlwind of odd characters and outrageous scenarios that echo the challenges of suburban life gone awry. The balance between ludicrous humor and thoughtful commentary is a hallmark of Waters' style, rendering "Polyester" both entertaining and intellectually engaging. Critics celebrate the film's perfect run time, arguing it avoids the modern pitfall of overextended narratives, leaving audiences craving more without risking fatigue. The Criterion edition enhances the experience with beautiful sound and picture quality, alongside bonus features that further enrich viewers’ understanding of the film. Deleted scenes, interviews, and rare behind-the-scenes glimpses offer an insider's perspective on the creative process. The introduction of Odorama, while met with critique for its clumsy execution, underscores Waters' commitment to immersive viewer experiences. The film ultimately celebrates the absurdities of everyday life, paired with quirky charm and timeless appeal. Its comedic nature strikes a chord with audiences who appreciate offbeat humor, making it a recommended choice for both newcomers to Waters' work and long-time fans alike. **
